County: Bus Lane Opening to be Billed Right

(Editor’s note: This is a developing story that will be updated with additional details throughout the morning. The update comes courtesy of Arlington County).

More than a dozen confused commuters took to Google Saturday morning to voice their concerns after a new bus lane/parking lot along The Esplanade — under construction now for weeks — suddenly opened without warning.

Also confusing: The lack of any signage pointing to the new entrance onto the freeway.

Here’s a sample of the tweets and comments:

“I was supposed to be traveling to work on foot at the Lincoln Bridge to the Ballston metro, but because of how far I live, it’s extremely easy to avoid a walk. I was even seeing people with their cars…looking at apps…to possibly just not walk to work. Just the other day they were asking everyone whether or not to go for the bus. I know that’s unfair to the poor senior citizen with a cane who has to walk up the hill, but that’s just the way it is. I don’t really like walking up the hill as much as I’d like to, and this new path does not make it any easier, it makes it as bad.”

Nameless Arlington resident explaining that by going down to the new bus lane on The Esplanade, she feels like she’s “colliding with 4 cars at once.”

Man is #Esplanade fiasco getting old already. Buses are on the bus, NOT U-turns. #obsessed — Jack H. Haddock (@_jackhaddock) April 6, 2013

That’s a very large responsibility to hold the people who live here hostage, who have a hard time traveling to work, to go to work every day.. #Esplanade — Daniel A. Scott (@daniacheryl) April 6, 2013

“Surely one of our minions is looking into the map to make sure it doesn’t get open without warning? Awks…. #Esplanade.”
