Toronto church sexual assault suspect arrested

A man has been arrested in connection with six alleged sexual assaults at a North York church dating back to 2013.

Toronto police announced the arrest of 51-year-old Rashid Ahmad in Toronto and said he is facing eight charges including sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching, extortion and drug possession.

Authorities believe Ahmad was responsible for six incidents at a Church and Nazarene church in North York.

In one incident, a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man with his hand under her dress, police said. A different incident reportedly occurred in 2014 during which a group of boys left the church and a man inappropriately touched three boys.

On Friday morning a suspect approached a 12-year-old girl as she walked with her grandmother near the church on Wilson Avenue and Caesar Street, just north of Eglinton Avenue, and molested her. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene and was arrested on Tuesday.

Ahmad was expected to appear in court on Thursday at York University.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Willowdale Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit at 416-808-5480 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
